Dr. Steve Barron was a family doctor for over 40 years. For 25 years, he also served as a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. In his first 20 years as a family doctor, the system worked well. In his last 20 years, the system didn’t work very well. He lived through the rise and fall of Canada’s health care system. Now retired, he lives in the Lower Mainland of, British Columbia.

Career Highlights of Dr. Stephen R. Barron

With a career in family medicine spanning over four decades, Dr. Barron established himself as a respected clinician, medical educator, and physician assessor. Throughout his career, he demonstrated a strong commitment to his patients, his colleagues, and the medical profession.

Clinical Practice:

Dr. Barron spent most of his career in full-service family practice at the Wilson Centre Family Practice in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, with medical staff appointments at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, and Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody.

 

Professional Leadership and Service:

As Co-Director of the Clinical Competence Program of BC, Dr. Barron developed extensive experience in the assessment of knowledge, clinical skills, and performance of practising physicians and international medical graduates (IMGs). This work led to additional roles as a practice inspector for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC), and as an expert medical advisor to the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
 

Medical Educator:

As a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Practice at the University of British Columbia for 25 years, Dr. Barron taught family medicine residents in his community practice. He also contributed to numerous continuing medical education initiatives for practising physicians. In the 1990s, he served as Co-Chair of the College of Family Physicians of Canada's National HIV/AIDS Education Task Force, and also co-chaired the BC Whiplash Initiative, which provided educational programs on the diagnosis and treatment of motor vehicle accident-related soft-tissue injuries. He was a faculty member of College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia's Prescriber Program, which focused on evidence-based prescribing for the management of chronic pain. Early in his career he was an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructor.
